Before his appointment as Full Professor for Interactive Systems at the University of Klagenfurt, Dr. Martin Hitz held positions as Assistant and Associate Professor at the University of Vienna. He was visiting researcher at the Politecnico di Milano and the University of Ottawa and visiting professor at the University of Linz (Austria) and the Carinthian Polytechnic Institute, Klagenfurt (Austria). From 2001 to 2006, Prof. Hitz has been Vice Rector of the University of Klagenfurt. In 2006, he has prepared the foundation of the fourth faculty of the university, the Faculty of Technical Sciences, which he presided over as Dean from January 1, 2007 to May 10, 2012. 2010 - 2012, he was also a member of the Senate of the University of Klagenfurt. From May 11, 2012 to October 28, 2020 he served again as a Vice Rector of the university. In June 2022, Hitz was elected chairman of the Senate (October 2022 - September 2025) of the University of Klagenfurt.


In the past, Prof. Hitz has worked in the areas of information systems and data modeling, software reuse and software metrics, as well as interactive simulation environments. Since his move to Klagenfurt in 2000 where he has founded the Interactive Systems research group, he has been focusing on HCI, usability, non-classical user interfaces, and e-learning environments, generally taking into account also mobile systems and pervasive interfaces (e.g., awareness systems for monitoring energy consumption, usability issues of smart living environments). Currently, he works on interaction techniques to control UAVs and smart home infrastructure.
